One key piece for when you do modify it to become a recognised shared
library: incompatible changes like this require increasing the major
version number (.so version number, or something like that), so that
the linker knows which version of the library it is allowed to use.
Otherwise we have a rather messy problem, as we've just discovered
here in Debian :-(
