A Texinfo user told me about this bug report filed with Debian, seems
like it belongs here with Olaf ...
(texi2dvi doesn't use -interaction, so I'm not sure what's up with that.)

Original report - #209347: latex / texi2dvi conflict for interactive or batch mo

Package: tetex-bin
Version: 2.0.2-4.3
Distribution: unstable
This also has something to do with the texinfo (4.6-1) package.
When run with the -file-line-error-style option, latex switches to batch mode,
even if you explicitely require otherwise with the -interaction option.
This problem breaks the (abscence of the) --batch option of texi2dvi which
uses -file-line-error-style when available.
