Answering my own email. If I use
\SetUnicodeOption{mathletters}
\SetUnicodeOption{autogenerated}
in the preamble, I get the glyph I want. I can also define my own
glyph by:
\DeclareUnicodeCharacter{960}{ensuremath{\pi}}
