I think normally Fink doesn't edit those files.

For me it added:
source /sw/bin/init.csh
to ~/.tcshrc (I don't know what it would do for bash).
I previously had Fink's teTeX; since all binaries were put into
/sw/bin, PATH wasn't modified when teTeX was installed.
