This is correct behaviour. Well, at least it is consistent with the
way Knuth designed TeX to work.
*\showhyphens{absurd}
Underfull \hbox (badness 10000) detected at line 0
[] \tenrm ab-surd
*\showhyphens{non-absurd}
Underfull \hbox (badness 10000) detected at line 0
[] \tenrm non-absurd
I don't think XeTeX should change that.
