Precedence plays the main role. For a test you could create  
executable empty files ls or cat somewhere, put this directory, for  
example the current working directory, at the beginning of PATH and try:

env PATH=.:$PATH ls -l ls
env PATH=.:$PATH cat cat ...

There's something the technicians need to learn from the artists. If  
it isn't aesthetically pleasing, it's probably wrong.
