As Barbara says:
http://www.w3.org/Math/pdf/mathchars.pdf
is now OK. Does a square surrounding a glyph mean that
it is satisfactorily represented in the CM fonts?
Better grubby glyphs than none at all.
On the other hand, there are an efficient ways to keep
in vectorized form isolated characters
extracted from zillions of fonts without keeping the zillions of
fonts at hand. Pop them into Illustrator;
convert to PS outline and then include as an EPSF.
Like STIX this does NOT imply use of TeX.
