Ah. The setdevice operator is what I was missing. Ok, grep -r in
texmf-dist for /OutputDevice|setdevice shows no active uses. That's not
proof there won't be problems, but at least it's a good sign. I guess
we'll see what happens when that version of gs is released ... --thanks, karl.
