Line lengths with polyglossia in Cantonese and Japanese ?

Thanks for prompting me in your initial reply to include an MWE. I
reduced the text to only the CJK examples and called it nojamin.tex
('noto japanese minimum').  Using xelatex
gave the same results as for the full file.

I then stripped the xetex command (nojalua.tex) and used lualatex.
None of the Han languages were formatted using lualatex.

The reports below are for
 Cantonese using chinese variant=traditional,
 Japanese using japanese,
 Simplified Chinese using chinese variant=simplified,
 Traditional Chinese using chinese variant=traditional

First, with xelatex (nojamin.tex) -
